Planning a Family Holiday

By: Tamsin Woodcock

When planning a family holiday, one very important thing to consider is travel insurance. Even if you are on a tight budget, insurance is not a thing to save money on - especially if you are travelling with children.

If you are arranging your family holiday with a travel agent, they will probably try and sell you travel insurance. But, before you commit yourself to their policy, shop around to see if you can get a comparable policy at a more reasonable rate. Searching online is a good way to see what is available and at what cost.

You will definitely need to have full medical cover for all your family members and you could add theft of belongings, flight cancellation or even holiday cancellation due to medical reasons. Obviously, the more cover that you want, the more your holiday insurance policy will cost.

Make a list of all the things that you want covered, if you are going on an adventure holiday be sure to get cover for all the things that you may do. If you sustain an injury whilst bungee jumping; you may find that you are not covered with a standard medical policy. Even a family holiday that is essentially risk free could be spoiled by a theft or loss of property. So, it is wise to try and cover every eventuality.

If you are hospitalised for any reason during your holiday, you will need travel insurance to cover the bills that are incurred. If you have property stolen or you lose your credit card or travellers checks you will be compensated if you have the right type of travel insurance policy.

The chances are that you will not need to make a claim on your holiday insurance policy but buying one is an absolute necessity to take away the possibility of you having to raise a huge amount of money to cover medical bills or even having to pay for a holiday that you can not take due to an unforeseen medical reason.

When planning your holiday, take the time to plan for exactly the right holiday insurance policy for your circumstances. A standard insurance policy may not include many of the things that you want to insure against. A search online can help you to determine the right policy for you and your family when you go on holiday. In any case, do not buy the first policy that you find, compare prices and cover to find exactly the cover that you will need.
